It's been almost two years since I've played and I figure to haul my carcass around a couple of parks marred by ugly metal baskets this summer..so, I'm reviewing what discs I have in stock. I also have to wonder what new models have been introduced during my hiatus and how they fly. Anybody keep on top of the new stuff and try it out?

I got my first, and probably last, holy hole-in-one last thrs! 1st this season, 3rd overall.
how it went down: i was trying to tell a story to my bud, and it wasn't going well because of his interruptions regarding issues not central to the theme of the story. i tried in vain to explain why the piggy, whose house was built with bricks, could withstand the force of the wolf's blow: built up tolerance. demoralized and a bit annoyed i stepped up to the box, about half the size of a regulation box, but then we saw this little dude, chris, that everyone who's played with him spontanaeously talks shit about. my bud was all "hide" i said "f that mighty-mouse." and sailed my ufo into its moonbase on the otherside of the stank-snatch bush 50 yrds away.

Disc Golf in Golden Gate Park Needs Your Help Oct. 20th!

On Thursday, October 20th at 2pm in City Hall in Room 416 (two weeks from today) the San Francisco Parks Commission will finally decide whether to remove the disc golf course in Golden Gate Park or make it permanent and possibly expand it.

This is a decision which will depend in part on how many supporters show up.

At the last hearing in April close to 100 of us attended, and we were told by the Parks Dept. that our attendance made the difference in not having the course removed. So our goal for this meeting is to more than double that and get over 200 people at the hearing -- but we can only do that with your help. If you, your friends, family members or co-workers have spent any time at the course, we need all of you to come to the hearing on October 20th.

If only a handful of us show up at the hearing you can be sure that the course will be pulled. That's right -- no more disc golf in Golden Gate Park. So won't you please join us on October 20th? We realize that getting time off on a weekday is no easy task -- nevertheless if there are hundreds of us there we will not be ignored or easily dismissed.

There are two other simple things you can do whether you can make it to the hearing or not:

CALL THE PARKS DEPARTMENT:
We are asking everyone to take a moment in the next 2 weeks and call the Parks Dept. at 415-831-2700 and simply tell whoever answers that you want the course to be expanded to a full 18 holes and made permanent. This will literally take 20 seconds - they will thank you for your input and add it to their tally of comments for or against and that's that. We all know what happens when we put things off until later, so PLEASE make this call TODAY.

SEND A LETTER TO THE PARKS DEPARTMENT:
If you have not already done so, please SEND A LETTER to the Parks Commission. Simply go to: http://www.sfdiscgolf.org/feedback/feedback.html

Once again, here are the details:

What: Parks Commission Hearing on Disc Golf in Golden Gate Park
When: 2pm, Thursday October 20th
Where: City Hall, Room 416

Together, we can make disc golf a permanent fixture in San Francisco.

Thanks for your continued support,

anyone have some time to help us with a Oregon Team Disc Golf logo?

shoot me an email for more info dandenny@comcast.net
I am headed to try and find it today. (Sept.11th) I used to live in LB and play ELDO all the time but now I live in Santa Monica so I am stoked to hear about this new spot closer to me. Oak Grove is a bit of a trek and I am not that crazy about the course.

hope to see some fellow tribers out there, I will post on what I find...

i'm going to be in the bay area in november for a bit, and although discgolf.com/org/net? lists all the courses in cali, could someone go a bit further and drop some spots that i shouldn't miss within 30 mi of sf? is the waterworks(?) park near oakland worthwhile?
i usually go solo, but i'd definately appreciate it if someone would want to meet up for a round.
thx. m@

April 6th Hearing at City Hall: Save Disc Golf in GG Park!

(apologies for cross-posting)

Dear Supporter of Disc Golf in Golden Gate Park:

On Wednesday, April 6th at 2pm in City Hall in Room 416 (one week from today) the San Francisco Parks Commission will decide whether to remove the disc golf course in Golden Gate Park or make it permanent. This is a decision which will depend in part on how many supporters show up to help impress upon the Commissioners that this sport they've barely heard of is indeed a valued source of recreation and enjoyment for us.

We're not sure what the extent of the opposition is, but we do know that it exists so if only a few of us show up at the hearing you can be sure that the course will be pulled. That's right -- no more disc golf in Golden Gate Park. So won't you please join us?

We realize that getting time off on a weekday is no easy task -- nevertheless we are calling on everyone who has enjoyed the course in Golden Gate Park to make the effort to come to the hearing. It is not necessary that you speak if you do not want to -- but it is crucial that you show up. And if possible, bring a friend or co-worker. If there are hundreds of us there we will not be ignored or easily dismissed.

Again, here are the details:

What: Parks Commission Hearing on Disc Golf in Golden Gate Park
When: 2pm, Wednesday, April 6th
Where: City Hall, Room 416

If you absolutely cannot make it we ask that you take a moment in the next week and call the office of Acting General Manager of the Parks Dept. (Yomi Agunbiade) at 415-831-2700 and simply tell whoever answers that you want the course to be expanded
and made permanent. This will literally take 20 seconds - they will thank you for your input and add it to their tally of comments for or against and that's that. We all know what happens when we put things off until later, so PLEASE make this call TODAY.

Together, we can make disc golf a permanent fixture in San Francisco.
i was at DeLa in Santa Cruz watching this guy practice for the Master's Tournement and he threw this disc using a hammer throw (a throw that I have a GOOD amount of distance with) and when he released, my buddy and I kinda smirked at his throw: it kind of came of and then looked like it was going to die BUT THEN, it flattened out and fricken' took off...

I couldn't believe the distance that this thing has and I watched hi, throw it four more times just to confirm that it wasn't a fluke.

I guess the trick is that they generate their own spin. weird science...

I'd have to say the course thats in Leadville, CO is my favorite. It was empty the day we played and it was hidden and wonderful. Trees, and alleys, drops, and uphills. Relatively small holes, but still fun.
http://www.pdga.com/course/courses_by_city.php?id=128

There is also a neat Ghost Town course. Fun to play.

Packed Courses!

In Charlotte we have about 4 big courses and this past weekend, they were PACKED. Our group of 4 was sandwiched with 4 groups in front of us and two behind.
We got to hole 12 before we stopped and went home.
I guess we'll need to go earlier or later as the season really gets going here in the south.
and of course, some people were just being rude. A group of 5 guys were throwing 2 discs each and taking a LONG time between throws.
Do you all tell people to hurry up if the course if packed? or do you relax and take your time? Is there any point in letting people play through you if there are big groups ahead of you?

Just wondering...
Does everyone stop playing in the winter or just keep throwing? I went out the other day and the cold plastic of the discs was chilling to hold, but not sure if I could throw the disc with gloves on.

I've heard of Album Park in El Paso... does anyone know anything about this course? I'll be missing De La (Santa Cruz) while there, but would love to play a new course!

well i played in my first tournament yesterday, although it wasnt your normal tourny, it was the "2004 1 disc ace race" we played 36 holes with one shot on each wich went by fast, shoot it was so quick that we wer playing with 7 or 8 guys at a time. it wasn't to bad for my first, i got lots of tips and had fun not to mention 2 disc a hat and bag tag. as for how i did i came close to hiting the basket once, not bad for a rookie i think.

Here in Sacramento there is a new course opening up in June a couple miles from my house. I was able to get ahold of the supervisor for this new course at the Parks and Rec. She wants me to do a walk-through of the course before just before it opens to get my feedback.
I drove by the course the other day and they have concrete tee's and baskets up, but the problem is, at a glance, the holes don't look much farther that 150 feet and since it's a new park all the trees are saplings. I know that nobody is going to play a course of par 2's, so if any of you know anything about course-planning or who to have this lady talk to, any help would be appreciated.
It seems it's not too often that Parks and Rec takes the side of the Disc-golfers here in Sac, (We had our best Charmichael course shut down last year despite a large petition to keep it, and another course was removed a couple years ago as well.) so since she asked for my feedback, I'd really love to help make this new course a great one.

In portland(dabney state park) on the first hole I didnt let go of the disc and it went to the right straight in to the road.
It then skipped and flew right in to a culvert.
I had to duck walk draging my head along the top and collecting spiderwebs the whole way. couldnt turn around so I had to reverse the 40 or so feet to get out.
it was a fly dye XL and at the time my goto disc.

Marty Hapner, of Santa Cruz Cali (De Laveaga), is being inducted into the Disc Golf Hall of Fame this summer (only 2 a year get in). For those that know him & know what he has done for the sport, and for De' La, know he deserves this ohnor with flying colors. For those that do not know him - just know this, that he has done sooooo much for the sport - he is ' discgolf.com', and among other commendations, Marty is one cool dude. De' La is lucky to have him... Congrats Marty...

Hey all, just joined. Been a player for about 10 years now, and I throw pistol for most of my mid and all of my long drives. I just wanted to get your opinions on the style. I know it's probably never going to get as far as a good over-hand "snap", but I've tried to switch and it always ends in disaster. Anyone know if there are any restrictions on pistol-throwing in tournaments? I've played a few amature ones and haven't had a problem.

I really do think it's kinda strange when someone is playing with a bag (or a caddy...yes, i've seen people used disc golf carts) that's loaded with an absurdly large arsenal.

Me personally, I use:

a 165 gram Tee Bird - for my distance driver and hammer throws

a 170 gram Cyclone - for approaches

a super floppy no name putter that just dies if you miss the basket and hit the ground

a no name 168 gram disc (old style black plastic) for certain holes that require a left fade (I'm a lefty overhand thrower who can only flick with a right hand so my shots all fade right but with this disc they fade left by some quirk of science and physics)

and a 164 gram Beast in case I lose my precious Tee Bird...

A little about the Innova Orc

Not quite a review, just some coments on the disc.

I've been throwing Beasts and Crushes lately for the big distance. I noticed early on that they were understable enough that if I threw them incorrectly, even just a little, they would flip and never come back on me. The Viking was a little more stable, but not as consistent as, say, a T-bird. The Viking would still flip and sometimes not come back. I have found that when I needed to throw hard in a headwind, or just needed to make sure the throw had some hyser to it, I would use an Eagle or Starfire. The Starfire is a great disc and I love the one I have. That's the trouble I only have one, because I don't like paying 30-35 dollars for a disc. Especially at the rate I lose them here at Delaveaga in Santa Cruz. I've never been able to throw an Eagle or T-Bird as far as the Starfire, they just seem like slower discs. When I heard about the Orc, I figured I'd at least have to give it a shot. Two weeks ago I played in the Berkeley doubles Icebowl. Berkeley has many holes that you need to throw out over the water and it can be very windy. I definitely wanted a long, stable, disc that I could be confident to throw. The Orc turned out to be just that disc. To me it feels like a faster 10x T-Bird.

The only way that the Orc flipped on it's own was when I threw it straight into a headwind as hard as I could, and it still came stable at the end. The Orc has definitely found a place in my bag.

what do you folks think is a optimal weight for distance drivers on warm, windless days? am i going to get more bang with more weight or less? i can't seem to discern the difference...

btw: my favorite and most consistent driver is my 170 gm Teebird

Finding a disc...

I found a disc on the course about a month ago. It had a name and number on it so I called. The person said the person on the disc had moved and she gave me that number. So I called the new number and I finally got the guy from the disc on the line. He said he had lost the disc a while ago. I told him I could put it in an envelop and leave it with our security guards and he could pick it up when he could.
It's been a month and the security guards gave the envelop back to me, they have a limit on how long stuff can wait there...
So what do I do with it now? It's not a very expensive disc. I don't really need one. Is there an Island for Misfit Discs?

Any ideas?

Putting in the wind

So today is a windy day here in Santa Cruz and for lunch I went out to practice putting. I'm having a tough time compensating for putting upwind. My putting style is just a straight put into the basket with very little loft. The wind was either kicking it up over the basket, or slamming it down towards the pole.

Anybody have some suggestions for compensating for the wind? I use a fairly stable putter (Challenger Pro) so I'm not off left or right very often. I plan on playing in a tournament in Berkeley in a couple of weeks and I hear that the breeze off of the bay can be pretty strong.

Any advice on throwing "rollers"?

Ie: what kind of disc do you use. Possibly trying to describe technique.

This is a throw that eludes my ability. Is it just a practice makes perfect kind of thing?
