I have this DISCussion with many people. It is so much easier to get approval for a new course when land is almost free for the taking. We are course starved in L.A. Stands to reason that Texas and the Midwest in general are the growth areas.

It's true that many of the top states for number of courses are in the Midwest. To kick a notch off of anyone's envy a good number of the courses in Iowa are on flood planes which does not make for an interesting terrain. Although a there are a number of fine courses that stretch through city/county parks that do make for a good 9 or 18.

My friend Matt (M@ on Tribe) and I have often had discussions about creating a more "urban" course. For instance, rent out an old dept. store and use the space to, in essence, create a miniture disc golf course. Think about it. Okay...so...what do you mean it's stupid! Na, really man, think about it: a down-shot through a tunnel, skipping your disc off a shallow pond, rolling it off a curved wall and into the basket. Short, yet tricky shots that are bound to make a fine and entertaining round of discin'. Of course there may be some liability problems, but that can be overcome by careful design.

Though hey. In defense of the Midwest, fuck Texas (I apologize if you're from Texas, but fuck your state, unless you're from Austin, then you're cool, generally speaking), we in Iowa were one of the states that pioneered the sport, so our available land is not the says all. Not to get snotty, but if it was a simple matter of land then why aren't Montana, the Dakotas, Wyoming, Pennsylvania or Virginia in the top ten? There may be a simple explanation, but it'll always come back to "Why is Texas number one?"

I lived in Iowa for a few years and absolutely LOVED the fact that there were SO many courses within a 30 minute drive.

My favorite course of all-time has GOT to be Ankeny, Iowa....and that one god-forsaken one up in Washington State. Shooting between 150' trees...mumble, mumble, grumble.

I'll have to play that course some time. Thanks for the tip. If you're ever back in Iowa you must play Turkey Creek just outside of Iowa City. That course is my favorite: rotating pin positions, cement tee blocks, very accurate signs, subtle, yet challenging terrain changes, and a fine balance between open and in the woods holes.

I have it on good authority that she's played every course in Iowa--at least those extant in '96-'97. I've lost my notes on all the Iowa courses (which would be dated now), though I remember bits of all of them. A "best holes" tour of Iowa courses would be sweet, indeed.

I'm in Nor Cal and we have quite a variety of courses to choose from, but I have to say, having had the opportunity to play 9 courses in the Des Moines area in last year's Worlds (one course doesn't count cause it was temporary) but the permanent one's I did play, Walnut Ridge, Big Creek, Caroll Marty, Ewing, Grandview and Pickard were all awesome and I will always remember the challenging rounds I played there.

Ewing, god damn that one's a hike, but a fine course indeed. Grandview, even though lacking in tee markers is an enjoyable play: lots of tall, old oaks to give ya room to take off. That one reminds me of of Jones Park's course in Cedar Rapids, the course I learned to play on by my parent's house. Ahh, memories.
      • Where do you find the ranks?

So where exactly can you find the states ranking?
        Where does Colorado stand?
I have gotten into the sport out here and love it!! There is a local course in Golden, Co at the high school. A stream runs through the course, so baskets go back and forth on each side, its no fun playing at high season, when the creek is raging, lost too many discs but worth the challenge!! Also have played various courses and think CO should be high on the list!! So let me know where you can find the ranks..........!!!

            please allow me to bitch:

i grew up in iowa/nebraska/missouri, and played most of the courses you are all talking about. i was very excited when i moved to hawaii, b/c there would be more great courses, right?

            wrong.

who has the most/best courses can be debated, but the state with the least is hawaii: a big fat 0 official courses.

            ...we find ways though...

We're not Hawaii, but the Twin Cities area has some GREAT courses. Kaposia, North Valley, Bryant Lake, Acorn, Oakwood, Hyland and Hyland Hills (miles apart) and more (and Moir). Anyone looking for a long weekend chain bang can't go wrong in Minneapolis and St Paul, (weather permitting). We're shooting now! Happy to help with more info if anyone wants it. Cheers. lw

I might just have to do that this summer. Two years ago me buddy Matt and I went up to Devil's Lake in WI and played Baraboo. I LOVE the North, no underbrush :)
